Jelly filled Donus (“Berliner”) and Cookies with Powdered Sugar Frosting (“Amerikaner”) are two famous baking goods in the carnival season of Germany. Whether with frosting, chocolate coating or a combination of both, they taste in almost any variation.
In today’s post I will show you how to bake delicious Cookies with Powdered Sugar Frosting. Have fun baking!
Homemade: Homemade Cookies with Powdered Sugar Frosting called “Amerikaner”

Ingredients for about 12 Cookies with Powdered Sugar Frosting called “Amerikaner”:
- 250 grams of flour
- 100 grams of sugar
- 2 eggs
- 100 milliliters of milk
- 75 grams of butter
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar
- 1 heaped teaspoon of baking powder
- 1 organic lemon
- 200 grams of powdered sugar
- Possibly smarties & sugar sprinkles for decoration
Required kitchen gadgets, helper & preparations:
- A mixer/food processor
- Large mixing bowl
- Sieve
- Baking tray + greaseproof paper
- Grater
- Lemon juicer
- Pastry bag or alternatively freezer bag
Instructions for the homemade cookies with powdered sugar frosting:
Add 100 grams of sugar, 1 packet of vanilla sugar…
…& 75 grams of room tempered butter…
…into a mixing bowl and whisk until creamy using a mixer or food processor.
Next add the eggs one by one and stir in each egg about 2 minutes at the highest level.
Sift 1 heaping teaspoon of baking powder…
…& 250 grams of flour and add to the batter.
Pour in 100 milliliters of milk &
…some zests of an organic lemon.
Mix everything with a blender or food processor for about 2 minutes until smooth.
Then fill the batter into a pastry bag (or alternatively a freezer bag).
If you use a freezer bag cut off one corner…
…and afterwards pipe 6 equal batter heaps (about 2 tablespoons) onto a lined baking tray (with some distance to each other)…
…& bake in the preheated oven at 180°C (top/bottom heat) for about 15 – 20 minutes…
…until golden brown. Then allow to cool onto the baking tray.
Meanwhile juice one lemon for the frosting.
Also sift about 200 grams of powdered sugar…
…& then stir together with the lemon juice until free of lumps…
…and you got a white and viscous syrup.
Give about 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar frosting onto the smooth surface of the cooled pastry…
…smooth down using a knife.
Decorate the baking goods with sugar sprinkles, smarties and other decoration ideas while the frosting is not hardened yet.
